What is Project Management

Project: Temporary and Unique.

A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service.

Temporary means every project has a definite start and definite ending. But it’s not ongoing job. Project ceases when it’s declared objectives have been attained but non-project undertakings adapt a new set of guidelines and continue to work.

Unique involve doing something which has not been done before and which is therefore unique.

For example making a New Bridge is Project, Making a new car model is Project work but production of car comes under Operation.

Project Management:

Application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently.

Process Groups: Help you to organize the processes by the kind of work you do.

Knowledge Area: Help you organize by the subject matter you are dealing with

As per PMBOK 5.0 we have 10 knowledge area and 44 processes

Knowledge Area consist of

  • Project Integration Management

  • Project Scope Management

  • Project Time Management

  • Project Cost Management

  • Project Quality Management

  • Project Human Resource management

  • Project Communication Management

  • Project Risk management

  • Project Procurement Management

  • Project Stakeholder Management

Projects are composed of processes.

A process is a series of actions bringing about a result. Project processes are generally performed by people and generally fall into 2 categories:

1. Project management Process concerns with describing and organizing the work of the project. Apply globally and responsible to manage the project throughout the life of Project. Also called as Process Group

2.Product oriented Process

concerns with specifying and creating project product. Also called as Life Cycle of Project. This is domain specific for example in IT we have water fall model, prototyping etc.

Both the processes overlap and interact throughout the project.

Project management processes fall into five groups:-

  • Initiating

  • Planning

  • Executing

  • Monitoring and Controlling

  • Closing

Before starting a Project

Before starting a Project we do following things

1. Business Case This document contains the need of project. Justify the project benefit for business. GAP analysis. Cost of project and return on investment.

2. Statement Of Work (SOW) - It contains the deliverable list with high level scope details. Define the various milestones and responsbility.

We do the feasibility study also if require before initiating the Project. These are the pre-requisite before starting any project.

Formally first document to start a project is “Project Charter”. Project Charter is authorize the Project manager to use the resources to accomplish the Project Objective.
